More information on A Psalm of Life

A Psalm of Life was written by Longfellow in 1838 following the tragic death of his first wife. Longfellow’s wife, Mary, died in childbirth along with the child they were expecting. Literary analysis indicates Longfellow intended the poem to serve as an inspiration both for himself as well as others who faced misfortunes from the past. The goal of the poem was to provide motivation and inspiration to live productively in present life rather than dwelling on tragedy and misfortunes in the past.

As a result of the many misfortunes and tragedies Longfellow suffered during his life, the focus of much of his poetry has resulted in a lasting cultural legacy and impact. Today, Longfellow’s works, including A Psalm for Life, continue to encourage and inspire an entire new generation.
